1908.4.7 – The Butte Hotel, Butte, Montana

My Dear Bertie: Today has been a very bright, sunshiny day, and I was out at 9 o’clock A.M. to keep an appointment, and from that time until 8 P.M. I was busy as a bee. My early morning engagement resulted in a sale of about $85.00 and having begun the day right, kept the good work up all day, and during the day sold over $400.00 worth more of goods. Yesterday I had a good day, and the two days sales were about $500, in addition to what I reported in my letter of Saturday. Well, now isn’t that just the best ever? I had intended leaving Butte tomorrow for Anaconda, but the way business has been coming my way I can hardly get consent of my mind to leave the scene of such a victory. So if you should get another letter from me here you may know I have tarried for good reason. You will notice from my route list that I am now a day behind on my dating, and today I should have been at Cheyenne, Wyo., when my trip would have been about half over. But I had not expected any such splendid results as I found every where I have been, so I know we should both not feel bad on account of the delay. This looks as though I would have a very prolonged stay this trip, and be away much longer than I had anticipated. Oh how much I am missing you, and if I could just spend the evenings at home, I would be in high clover. Butte is a splendid town, and there appears to be plenty of money here. I certainly can see where I have made a great mistake in not coming to this “golden west” years ago, and had I done so, and have expended the energy here that I did in W.V., I most certainly could have made a nice bunch of money. But as I have “arrived” I will do the best I can to make good on the “home run.” I have so far on this eastern trip done more in my line than I will venture to say any other man in my line has ever done in such a short period, and that is something to talk about. I find everybody courteous, and pleasant as “an elder brother” ought to be, and of course that all helps to make like the western business people all the more. If this liking on my part continues, I may make my home in the west. See? Are you willing to join your fortunes with mine and try it around? Is it really true, that we are “wore out” here among ’em, or am I dreaming? I am glad to tell you that the job of plastering I applied to that “kink” in my back has helped me, and I have worn the plaster since Sunday night. Tonight I shall put on another one and I hope that may entirely cure me. I hope this may find you and the little people well and happy, and with my dearest love to you, with lots of hugs and kisses for you and the little ones, I am, lovingly, Your husband, Geo. W.D.
