Studio Locations • 850 & 852 Broadway, New York City • 904 & 906 Park Avenue, Brooklyn, New York E.F. Wagner operated prominent dual-location studios serving both Manhattan and Brooklyn during New York’s photographic golden age. Multi-address studios were typically large commercial operations catering to a wide clientele, from working families to affluent urban residents. Broadway was a major commercial corridor associated with prominent photographers, while Park Avenue in Brooklyn served a rapidly expanding residential population. Wagner’s elaborate advertising design and emphasis on “artistic” photography suggest a studio positioned in the higher tier of the competitive metropolitan portrait market.

American; late 19th-century urban family portraiture reflecting Victorian maternal imagery and metropolitan studio aesthetics.

Highly ornate illustrated advertisement reading: “Artistic Photography” “E.F. Wagner” “Instantaneous Process Used” “Duplicates Can Be Procured At Any Time” Locations listed for both Manhattan and Brooklyn studios.

Historical Note

Urban family portraiture flourished in the late nineteenth century as photographic technology improved and middle-class families sought to document domestic life. Mothers were often posed as the emotional anchor of the family, with children arranged closely to convey unity and care. Vignette compositions became popular for their soft, painterly aesthetic. Albumen prints, though rich in tone when new, commonly fade and develop surface spotting over time.
