Description
Portrait of two women, cabinet card studio photograph with applied hand coloring, c. 1890s. The sitters are posed standing side by side in a formal studio setting, wearing dark, full-length dresses with pronounced leg-of-mutton sleeves and fitted bodices characteristic of late Victorian fashion. One woman rests her hand confidently on her hip while the other stands slightly angled, suggesting familiarity and a close personal or familial relationship. Subtle hand-tinting highlights facial features and a floral accent at the waist, a popular decorative practice of the period. The photograph exhibits surface wear, color fading, and abrasions consistent with late 19th-century photographic materials and later hand-color application. A faint handwritten inscription along the lower margin references the 1890s and appears to identify the sitters, indicating later family annotation.
