Shell
The cameo appears to be carved shell, almost certainly helmet shell (Cassis) rather than stone. Evidence: Warm cream figure against a peach-orange background Slight translucency Soft, flowing hair carving rather than sharply undercut lines Style & Carving Classical female profile facing right Hair swept up with loose curls — a Neoclassical Revival motif Smooth modeling of neck and shoulders Not a generic “cookie-cutter” cameo: the hair has depth and individuality This level of carving suggests mid- to higher-quality workshop production, likely Italian (Naples/Torre del Greco), which dominated shell cameo carving in the 19th century. Mount & Construction Metal The mount is gilt brass or pinchbeck, not solid gold. Rich yellow tone with engraved decoration on the reverse. This was very typical for Victorian cameo jewelry intended to look luxurious without the cost of gold. Design The brooch is horizontally oriented with: Central oval cameo Symmetrical fan-shaped side panels Openwork filigree design This winged / fan form is distinctly Victorian and was fashionable from the 1860s through the 1880s. Pearls The pearls appear to be seed pearls, most likely natural. They are: Small Slightly irregular Set individually (not molded) Seed pearls were extremely popular in Victorian jewelry and often symbolized: Purity Mourning (in some contexts) Refinement This piece is not strict mourning jewelry, but the pearls do nod toward sentimental Victorian symbolism. Back & Findings (Dating Clues) From the rear image: Tube hinge (long barrel hinge) → pre-1900 C-clasp (no safety catch) → strongly Victorian Decorative engraving on the back → quality-conscious production
