Description

United States, patented March 29, 1927 Silverplate over brass (cast metal) This Art Deco salt shaker reflects the transitional design language of the late 1920s, combining classical verticality with streamlined ornament. The shaker features a tall, tapered baluster form rising from a flared base, with incised linear panels and stylized foliate motifs arranged symmetrically along the body. These decorative elements emphasize height and rhythm, characteristic of early American Art Deco metalware. The domed top terminates in a pointed finial and would originally have been pierced to dispense salt, while the interior bears a clearly stamped U.S. patent date of March 29, 1927, along with a model number and “U.S.A.”, confirming American manufacture and registered design. The interior shows remnants of gilding, a common feature in salt shakers to protect the metal from corrosion. Such shakers were produced as individual table objects or as part of matching condiment sets during the interwar period, intended for formal dining tables, sideboards, or hotel service. Surface wear, patination, and loss of plating are consistent with age and functional use, contributing to the object’s authenticity and historical character. Condition: Structurally intact with surface wear and patina consistent with age Function: Table salt shaker Period: Early Art Deco, interwar period (late 1920s)
