Dein aufrichtiger Freund J. Bauer

German

Dear Friend, I cannot say whether I will soon return to Limburg. I have been in Oberlahnstein and from there traveled to Koblenz. The region is very beautiful, and I have seen many things that pleased me greatly. Unfortunately, I had to end my journey earlier than planned, as I was urgently called home. My mother has fallen ill, and therefore I must now remain at her bedside until she improves again. However, I hope that I will soon be able to write again and then report more about my travels. Perhaps we will meet again in the autumn in Limburg. It would give me great pleasure to see you again and spend a few days in your company. Please give my greetings to all our friends and remain kindly disposed toward me. Your sincere friend, J. Bauer

This letter reflects everyday middle-class correspondence in 19th-century German society. Travel along the Rhine and Lahn river regions was common during the period, particularly as railroads and improved roads expanded mobility. The tone of the letter illustrates the social importance of friendship networks and regular written communication in maintaining relationships across distance. Family obligation is also evident; the writer immediately interrupts his journey to return home due to his mother’s illness, reflecting the strong familial responsibilities characteristic of the period.

Historical Note

This handwritten letter, composed in German Kurrent script, documents a traveler’s journey through the Rhine valley region of western Germany. The writer recounts visits to Oberlahnstein and Koblenz and expresses admiration for the scenic landscape before explaining that he must prematurely end his trip due to his mother’s illness. The letter illustrates the social and familial obligations that shaped daily life in the nineteenth century, as well as the importance of handwritten correspondence for maintaining friendships across distance. Fold lines in the paper indicate that the document was originally folded and sent through the postal system, typical of personal letters before the widespread use of envelopes. The towns mentioned—Limburg, Oberlahnstein, and Koblenz—are located in western Germany along the Lahn and Rhine rivers. During the 19th century this region became famous for picturesque landscapes and was a popular destination for travelers. Koblenz in particular served as an important transportation and commercial hub where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet. Letters such as this provide insight into travel patterns and personal networks in the decades before widespread telephone communication.
