1908.4.27 – Great Western Hotel, Sheridan, Wyoming
Letter
Sheridan, Wyoming April 27, 1908 Dear Bertie: I had a nice nap after writing you my letter this a.m. at 12:20 and after spending the forenoon writing up my business, I found the following results for last week’s work: Bozeman, $616.00 Livingston, $1,338.00 Billings, $454.00 Total $2,408 for last week. Now what do you think of that? I reckon that is going some, don’t you? I will not get skunked at Sheridan either, as I landed over a hundred dollar order today, and hope to do as well tomorrow, but won’t feel too badly if I should not get it. This order was sold today to one of the largest dry goods stores in the city, who are just completing a new building and will occupy it soon, so I wish just in time to get ready for the “new room,” you know. I do hope this “pay streak” may continue, as my prospecting has certainly been successful so far, as I have booked over $10,000 worth of business since March 1st, and I reckon not many of the force are beating that. I never felt better in my life, and the Wyoming atmosphere, while quite breezy, does not disagree with me in the least. Sheridan is noted for its wind, and I am informed the way they distinguish a tenderfoot from an old ranger here, is the way the two classes chase their hats. The tenderfoot is always on the run trying to catch his hat, while the old ranger, just stands bareheaded, and instead of running after his old hat, stands still for a few minutes and picks up the other fellow’s hat which is always rolling along the streets. But I guess I am well ballasted and won’t blow away, and if I do, will probably alight somewhere, as there is no scarcity of room in this section. I will probably leave here tomorrow for Deadwood, S.D., my next stop, and will write you from there. I will then go to Lead, S.D., and from there to Cheyenne, Wyo., and will likely be there three days. I will give you my future dates from there. I hope this will find you all well and very happy, and the beautiful spring weather will bring you better health. With my best love to you and the little ones, with lots of hugs and kisses, Lovingly yours, Geo. W.D.
