1909.2.2 – The Portland Hotel, Portland, Oregon
Letter
The Portland Hotel Portland, Oregon Feb. 2, 1909 Dear Bertie: More rain today. Guess I will wear out my umbrella now. This morning when I started out, the first familiar face I saw was Bishop Hughes coming out of a phone booth. I hailed him, and he locked arms with me, and we promenaded down the lobby of The Portland, in fine style. He was very cordial and we had quite a social chat, and among other things requested me to remember him to “Spud” when I wrote to him again. I assured him I would when I wrote him again, and then I informed “Spud” had drifted, and I had no communication with him. He is 42 years of age, ..and has six children living, and two dead. Now wouldn’t that jar you? He remarked there was nothing inactive about him. And I should rather reckon not, with 8 to his credit. Ed. is alright, and is right down to date. First thing he said after a hearty hand shake and still “hanging on” was, “Well, are you making lots of money?” Rather a coincidence I should meet him under such circumstances. I had wondered if I might not run across him while here, as I had seen by papers he had been here recently. But this time he had just arrived, having come to town last night on special business. He came to my room after noon, and spent a couple of hours with me. I expect to call on them tomorrow evening, and will tell you about it after it happens. He showed me a photo of “Mrs. Hayward,” as he calls his wife, and she is a very good looking one, on paper. He said the picture was an old one, several years ago. I hope you are all well and happy. With my dearest love to you and the little ones, I am Lovingly your husband, Geo. A. D.
