Advances in manufacturing expanded access to decorative jewelry, allowing personal ornament to become both a social statement and an everyday necessity.

Hat pins are long, decorative pins used primarily to secure women’s hats to elaborately styled hair during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (c. 1880–1925).
